Malawi’s only wildlife sanctuary needs your urgent help
The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is under huge pressure as the COVID-19 crisis has forced them to close to visitors, cancelling guided tours, and suspending their volunteer placements.
This means a huge loss in their revenue and they are running crucial life-saving work with fewer people and less funding.
In care at the sanctuary right now are 8 olive baboons, 36 yellow baboons, 115 vervet monkeys, 5 blue monkeys, 3 serval cats, 1 rock python, 1 crocodile, 2 spotted eagle owls and 1 African grey parrot. That’s 172 animals in total being cared for, that have no where else in Malawi that can help.

Animals like Tao, a tiny vervet monkey was rescued from a roadside vendor, who were trying to sell him as a pet. Thankfully, Tao is now safe in the care of his new foster mum Rain – another vervet the sanctuary also saved from the illegal pet trade (both pictured below, and Tao above).

The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre urgently need donations for essentials such as food, medicine and orphan care, to make sure animals such as Tao and Rain stay safe during this crisis.

- £5 could pay for a TB test for a rescued monkey to make sure it is healthy enough to be integrated into a troop.
- £10 could buy one week’s worth of antibiotics to treat sick and injured animals.
- £20 could support two weeks of care for an orphaned monkey, including health checks, food and enrichment items to help them learn vital foraging skills.
- £50 could pay for our team to remove a life-threatening poacher’s snare from a zebra and treat the wound.
- £100 could buy a heat lamp to keep infant animals warm during critical periods of rehabilitation.
- £400 could cover food costs for all wildlife residents for one week.
